Our interview with Dave Sala

Twenty something singer songwriter Dave Sala sought comfort in music early one, his passion for the art lead to drive towards a music career. He has a distinct sense of melody which can be heard in his self penned lyrics, set with complimenting guitar riffs.  While working on a full length album, and getting signed with a label, Dave let us in on his music and future aspirations.

Stylinzine.com:  Hi Dave, well first of all, tell us a little bit about you?
Dave Sala: Well, hhm...LOL....What do you want to know? haha. I am 23 years old. I'm Filipino and I was adopted and raised here in the United States. I just turned 5 when I came over here. I am a little bit crazy when I am around people. I feel comfortable around everybody and I try to have fun as much as possible. I highly value honesty and friendships. My fave colors are red and black along with dark blues, greens, and....aww..heck...I like every color. Umm....I am currently single and never had a girlfriend. I'm just simply waiting.

Stylinzine: For anyone out there who might be new to your music, how would you describe your sound?
Dave: My sound would most likely be percussive acoustic alternative/rock. I don't understand all the different genres but it would probably be that. If my friend would fully describe it, his description would be about a page long. LOL

Stylinzine: Tell us about the one place you’d absolutely love to perform, and why?
Dave: I would love to perform at a big venue like Creation because it's a huge festival of different artists and musicians. Plus the 70,000+ people there would totally rock my socks off.

Stylinzine: Which artist’s and or bands have you worked with so far? Or would like to work with?
Dave: I was in two bands. 'Higher Still' and 'the Nodding Dogs'. I wouldn't mind being in a band that shares the same genre or embraces the same likeness in styles with my music. I wouldn't mind being a drummer or a lead guitarist for a band either. I like being in the background laying out the music for a song and not being the front man sometimes. If there were clones of me, I'd would love to jam with all of them. I've had the awesome opportunity to play with a lot of local artists like Justina from New Jersey, drummer Jim Oakley also from NJ, Jason Vertucio from Bristol, PA and Lindsay Cummings from Philly just to name a few. I also had the privilege to open up for rock band KURIOS.

Stylinzine: What would a typical day for you include?
Dave: Well, right now I have three part-time jobs. I work at a Horseradish Factory and I make cocktail sauce for seafood. LOL. It’s a job...what else can I say about that? LOL I also work as an IT Intern at a technologies company that makes automated robots for industrial and commercial use. And lastly I also give guitar lessons. I have about a dozen students right now and the list is growing. In between work and sleep I find time to eat, chat with friends on IM, and work on music either playing guitar, drums, keyboards, kazoo, or the triangle. All of that keeps me busy.

FEATURES

Stylinzine: As a songwriter what do you thing is the most important thing to consider?
Dave: As a songwriter, honesty and having a message with your lyrics, is the most important thing to consider. I find it's best to write things that people can relate to.

Stylinzine:  Tell us about your process of penning lyrics (inspiration, etc…)?
Dave: Well for me, I'm kinda weird when it comes to penning lyrics. I'm messy when it comes to that. I have little post-it notes everywhere with little phrases or sayings that pop out my head. Sometimes I have things crash into my brain when I am driving or working. I am the type of person that has to write it down as soon as possible or I'll forget it. I hate forgetting things. It makes me mad!

Stylinzine: If you were to pick three of your ultimate favorite songs what would they be and why?
Dave: I really couldn't pick three songs out of a hat. I Love all kinds of genres and all kinds of songs. It's hard because I have no favorites. On one hand, I see every song as a favorite. But on the other...there ARE songs that move me in different ways that others can't.

Stylinzine: What inspired you to become a musician, and what kind of music do you typically listen to?
Dave: I guess it started when I was really young. I would sing at the top of my lungs at kids’ tapes and such. Then my friends would give me CD's of various Christian and secular artists. I would sing along with them. Then I wanted to play piano from listening to Michael W. Smith. That lasted about 2 years when my desire of playing an instrument went to something a little different — Guitar. At first when I switched I wanted to play drums but my folks wouldn't tolerate something like that in the house. LOL so guitar it was. The rest is history...LOL...well I recently acquired a drum set from my folks from Christmas so I've been jammin on them. I love everything...just the aspect of music in all these forms is really kewl beans to me.

Stylinzine: What are your thoughts on music in general in reference to the current scene?
Dave: So far...its kewl beans but it seems to be so cookie-cutter lately. Like that girl sounds just like that girl, or that guy sounds just like that guy. There is soo much talent out there. I think that the music scene has to be less greedy, back-stabbing and take some more chances on indie people cuz those people h
ave dreams. I dunno, it's just weird...music is a beautiful thing. I just don't want it to get ugly with artists and labels.

Stylinzine: What are you currently working on?
Dave: I am currently working on a full-length album of my music. I have a demo but its 2 years old. I have been working on this latest project for about a year now. Slow progress because of lack of money and lot of bills, LOL. But it's all good. Hopefully sometime soon I can get it out. I know a few fans that are dying to get their hands on it. Mostly because I wrote so much more material since the DEMO and people would like a CD of that.

Stylinzine: Well, thanks for taking time out for Stylinzine.com, before we wrap up what would you like to say to your fans/aspiring musicians?
Dave: First off, I would like to say to everyone: never ever ever lose your dream or love of music. Or any dream for that matter. Embrace it because it's a part of you and you can never lose it. Keep working hard at what you do. Don't give up when things don't go your way. Everything happens for a reason. It's a promise that is always kept, if you believe that, time doesn't matter. Thanks so much for letting me do this. I hope I wasn't too confusing. LOL :)
Take Care, God Bless,
