Inspired
by her brother’s skills in string instruments, Canadian rising star
Avril Lavigne taught herself to play when she was 12. Though she strums
the cords like a pro she never learnt to read music as she believes in
playing by ear rather than by rules of musical annotation. She grew up
as the middle child in small town (population: 5,000) Nappanee, Ontario,
Canada. She longed for stardom and showcased her vocals every chance she
got. Whether it was singing radio hits at the top of her lungs at home,
singing gospel tunes in the local church choir, to even country music at
fairs and festivals.
Her dreams towards stardom first took form
when, Antonio “LA” Reid CEO of Arista records discovered Avril’s vocal
talents in New York City and signed the16 year old about two years ago
without a second thought; soon after Lavigne plunged into the creative
process of composing the tracks. However her album wasn’t complete until
she moved to Los Angeles, and met producer/songwriter Clif Magness.
Lavigne claims that she tries
to avoid the credibility pitfalls plaguing the brigade of bubble-gum
divas that ruled the charts in the late '90s and early millennium. He
pens her own music and aims to dictate the kind of music style she wants
to market. As a rising star she is quite obviously being steered by a
record label whose goal (understandably so), revolves around album sales
and financial profit. Through her performances she projects pure energy and
spunk. However her ‘own’ style gets lost in the mesh since she so
obviously reminds music critics of previous newcomers and their
‘celebrity’ approach. The approach being — stir up controversy by
ragging on chart toppers who have several platinum albums to
their credit and blatantly declare, “My Music is different it’s
different from the musical style taken on by other musicians” all
attempted at keeping the public spotlight fixed on each respective
newcomer. A marketing strategy that might just need up nipping her
success and bury her true talent, if she doesn’t start paying close
attention to what her true musical skill and style is, and publicize
accordingly.
