Interview with Heather Baker and Marc Silverman of rock group 'As Night Falls'

Stylinzine.com: Hi Guys, well to start with, how about a round of intros?
Heather Baker:  I’m Heather Baker and I play lead guitar and sing in As Night Falls.
Marc Silverman: "I'm Marc Silverman, on guitar"

Stylinzine.com: How and when did you all meet and collectively form the band?
Heather:
Steve and I have known each other since we were born, and started jamming in the 5th grade. We’ve experimented with numerous of genres throughout the years and finally found a band we felt could help us reach a full potential. The band collectively came together in February 2004.
Marc: "I met everyone in late May to audition for the band and within a week of meeting everyone I was playing my first show with them"

Stylinzine.com:  How would you describe your music in terms of being different and new?
Heather: We have always focused on making the vocals apparent with colorful harmonies. We try to let the music breathe by making sure that each guitar and bass part do not conflict with one another and allow room for the vocals to cut through entirely. We’ve also started experimenting more with odd time signatures and effects for our future record.
Marc: "The EP is different in the sense that you've got non-stop melody and beautiful harmonies.  The second you listen to our music, the combination of Steve and heather stand right out, so that's really a cool thing.  The new stuff we have coming up is going to be full of back and forth singing with a lot more effects on guitars and what not"

Stylinzine.com:  In each of your opinion, who is/has been your most significant musical influence?
Heather: Fleetwood Mac has been and always will be my biggest musical influence along with many other bands from the 60's and 70's. Not that we particularly sound like anything from that era, but I believe that the best song writing and concept was drawn from those years.
Marc: "Even as a guitarist I really admire and take to songwriters and vocalists more. I write a lot and I'm going to be contributing more to the lyrical process in the new material, but as far as one person who has blown my mind is Brandon Boyd.  The man can just write lyrics and produce melodies that just pull you in and make you sit there and wonder how he came up with that."

Stylinzine.com: Which band or artist do you think has been the most inspirational success over the last four/five years?
Heather:  The Used, have definitely been an inspiration in the past few years as far as success is concerned.
Marc: "That's tuff, cause its hard to think of a handful of bands who are still around from 5 years ago that are still going strong.  Probably for me it would be Jimmy Eat World.  Those guys deserve everything they have. They write amazing music and I hope they are around for a long long time."

Stylinzine.com:  What has been your biggest struggle and greatest accomplishment so far?
Heather:  Our biggest struggle so far was trying to find the right members that were dedicated enough. We finally have the perfect people on board now and we are very excited to continue on for the long hall. Our greatest accomplishment so far has been the contacts and team that have developed for As Night Falls.
Marc: "Struggle probably would be getting a lineup of players set and gelling together.  Steve and Heather have been through quite a few with this band and now its perfect, God knows I have only been through one with our bass player and that was tuff.  Accomplishment has to be where we are right now, we are so lucky to have the support we do from kids everyday.  Its beautiful."

Stylinzine.com:  If there was one thing that would momentously help underground rock groups receive due recognition, what would it be?
Heather:  The ability for kids across the states to be more open minded when it comes to music would help underground rock groups to be more appreciated and understood. From what I’ve seen so far, there is a definite lack of patience among the younger audiences to experiment with new sounds.
Marc: "For kids to just go out, see the shows and start talking.  If you think a band is great, buy a CD, a shirt, and just talk about them the next day at school or what not.  Support them whatever way you can, its a tuff business and any little sort of promotion helps."

Stylinzine.com: Who takes care of the creative process of writing and composing the lyrics and music for your sets?
Heather:  We write together as a team and bring all of our ideas to the table.
Marc: "Its all a joint effort, we all come up with our ideas and lobby them around and try to come up with something that really works. Heather and Steve wrote the lyrics on the EP, and like I said earlier, I'm going to start helping out with lyrics in the new material."

Stylinzine.com: What are you all currently working on or preparing for?
Heather: We are currently preparing for our future full-length that will be hopefully coming out within the next 8 months
Marc: "
"We're just writing, writing, writing!! We’re getting ready for the New Year because we have a lot of exciting things coming up, and of course lots of shows."

Stylinzine.com:  If you were to describe the ‘ultimate’ concert, how would it play out?
Heather:  The ultimate concert would be held at a large venue with other bands we enjoy playing with. To me the best feeling consists of an abundance of our fans that interact with the band by singing our lyrics with us.
Marc: "Oh God, I've always wanted to see a show with Michael Jackson as the headliner, MC hammer, Incubus, Glassjaw, and Mars Volta for support! ha haa ha"

Stylinzine.com:  Thanks for chatting with Stylinzne.com, but before we wrap up, what’s the one word, each of you feel, best describes your music and interest to listeners?
Heather:  "Influential"
Marc: “powerful."
