Oscars – The 80th Annual Academy Awards

The Red Carpet, Stage and Wins

Without the big night of awards, fashion critique, acceptance speeches and unscripted celebrity antics, the entertainment industry simply wouldn’t be all that glitzy or fun!

The Oscars are an annual event of considerable celebrated brouhaha and anticipation. This is where the world of movies gets its big pat on the back, as actors, directors, producers and writers compete for the prestigious golden statuette that affirms one’s sustainable presence in the entertainment industry. In short, it simply says, ‘I made it!’.

Going strong for 80 years, this year the Oscars, which like clockwork, light up the L.A. entertainment scene every year, almost didn’t happen!  The Golden Globes’ official ceremony was cancelled as actors decided to boycott the event, out of respect for the writers of the Writers Guild of America. The writers were on strike for several months, on account of not getting a fair share of the cut of profits brought to the entertainment industry, thanks to alternative means of media broadcast/presentation, including DVD sales and the internet streams.

Thus, whether or not the Oscars would officially take place in its impressive, signature style of glitz and glamour, remained largely uncertain, until the issue over re-renewed contracts was aptly resolved.

However the strike that began on November 5th last year, with 12,000 writers taking part, concluded on February 12th. The writers’ union’s stance was against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), an organization that represents the interests of 397 American film and television producers, including CBS, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, NBC Universal, News Corp/Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Walt Disney Company.

An agreement was finally reached and a deal was approved by both the Writers’ Guild and AMPTP. Whether the new agreement over fair residuals will be accepted remains to be seen, however the writers largely agreed to end the strike, thus a sigh of relief for Hollywood’s most eagerly awaited event — the Oscars.

Even though the strike considerably dipped profits for the entertainment industry, (NPR reported losses of $1.5 billion, UCLA Anderson School of Management reported $380 million and economist Jack Kyser accounts losses to be $2.1 billion), the industry was ready to shell out big for the event that took place on Sunday, February 24, 2008 , at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

The event which was hosted by The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, was met with light hearted humor on stage and a whole lot of delighted merriment amidst the celebrity guest list, all of whom hit the scene in spectacularly fashionable gowns, tuxes and to accessorize, a high spirited celebratory mood of all smiles.

So while the US entertainment industry reels from the recent ‘drama’ over contracts and protecting the rights of the writers, is was a good thing that Hollywood had one night of celebration, of talent and cinematic skills of all sectors of the industry that’s interdependent.

Writers contribute largely, (albeit somewhat in the shadows) to the industry which without ‘words’ would just be lights, camera…..(sans scripts) no action. It would just be actors standing around, cameras ready and no real show.

Hollywood ’s big night, also gives us a chance to scope out the latest industry offerings to add to our entertainment appetite.
