Our Interview with MoZella

Stylinzine.com: Hi MoZella, well to begin with tell us a little bit about you and your music?
MoZella: My music is a mix of a lot of things. I am a singer songwriter, I play guitar and some piano. I like jazz, hip hop, R&B and so forth. So, I guess I sound like a little of all of those. Some say I sound like a mix between Macy Gray, Norah Jones, and Nelly Furtado.

Stylinzine.com: Who would you say is your biggest inspiration in life?
MoZella: I don't know if I have one single inspiration in life. I look up to a lot of artists. I look up to peace keepers, poets, and environmentalists too! Small children inspire me as well. They say the most simple but honest things. If you want the truth, ask a child!

Stylinzine.com: Which recording artist do you identify with most?
MoZella: I'm a big Jill Scott fan. She taught me to say it like it is. I'm also a David Gray fan, he taught me brutal yet beautiful honesty. As a writer, it's important to tap into those places that are hard to get into without sounding trite, he's really good at that.

FEATURES

Stylinzine.com: If you could perform anywhere at all where would it be and why?
MoZella: I'd like to play on a big stage in my home town of
Detroit. It would be great to have all my family and friends there to have a good time. The Hollywood Bowl would be cool too. It's so legendary!

Stylinzine.com: What are your future plans in terms of your music, album, and so forth?
MoZella: Well, we just shot the video and we are now doing the album art work.
The single should hit radio mid summer. Then, the album will come out in Early August. I'll be playing and touring all summer off and on.

Stylinzine.com: Which 'one hit wonder' (thus far) do you feel disserved a more lasting career?
MoZella: That's an interesting question. I have no idea! Well, I guess I'd like to see Jo Jo put another song out on radio. I always catch myself singing that song, 'Get out -LEAVE- right now. It's the end of you and me.' It's sort of young and silly, but it's a really good song!

Stylinzine.com: What do you think it takes to carry off a great performance/show?
MoZella: Being comfortable is really important. If you are nervous on stage, the crowd feels it too. Then they get weird. Also, it's important to connect with the crowd. They are paying money for the experience. They wanna feel something.
So, I always try to look at people when I sing. I also talk directly to people in the crowd.

Stylinzine.com: Given the choice, which would you prefer and why, - mass commercial success right now or recognition as a true musician in time?
MoZella: I'd like to have both if that's possible! I've been at this music thing for quite some time now. It's been a slow up hill battle! I'm ready to have a bigger commercial appeal. I don't think it would take away from my credibility. I'm still a songwriter and an artist. I'd just like to reach more people.

Debut album - "I Will" in stores now!

Stylinzine.com: What is your favorite song of all time and why?
MoZella: 'Lover You Should've Come Over' by Jeff Buckley. It's haunting and beautiful. It taught me to pour my heart out when I sing.

Stylinzine.com: If you weren't in the entertainment biz what would you be doing?
MoZella: How could I not be a singer?! I can't see myself doing anything else. Although, I always joke that I'd be a Spanish teacher (I speak Spanish). Oh, and I secretly daydream about getting a degree in astrophysics. I love stars, planets, and the unknown. I even have a song called ''Light Years Away'.
I stay up late at night and watch programs on PBS and Discovery about all that stuff. I'm a dork!

Stylinzine.com: Which band/soloist do you think has standout style?
MoZella: Good question. It feels like the industry has been a little stale. I have not heard something that really stands out in a long time. Ray LaMontagne has got a great sound. I like Anna Nalick too.

Stylinzine.com: By the end of the year what do you hope to accomplish in terms of your career?
MoZella: By the end of the year, I hope to have a record out and doing well on the charts. I hope to be touring and having a good time!

Stylinzine.com: What would the most flattering concert review about you say?
MoZella: It would say that I was genuine and that I connected with the audience.
It would say I was captivating.

Stylinzine.com: Well thanks for dropping by Stylinzine.com, before we wrap up; what would you like to share with our readers?
