Our Interview with Juliet Lloyd

Stylinzine.com: Hi Juliet, well to begin with tell us a little bit about you and your music?
Juliet Lloyd: Hi! Thanks so much for having me.  I'm a singer/songwriter living in
Boston, MA.  My music is kind of a mix of pop, jazz, and soul, and I play the piano to accompany myself.

Stylinzine.com: Who would you say is your biggest inspiration in life?
Juliet Lloyd: I think my parents and family are my biggest inspirations.  They've been really supportive of everything I've ever done and that inspires me to keep pushing myself toward my goals.

Stylinzine.com: Which recording artist do you identify with most?
Juliet Lloyd: I guess style-wise, I identify most with Alicia Keys, although I really appreciate how low-key and classy Norah Jones is.  They're the two I can identify with most.

Stylinzine.com:  If you were a musical instrument, what would you be?
Juliet Lloyd: Hmm...I guess I'd say a piano!  I love how it can express the full range of everything - loud, soft, simple, complex, etc.

Stylinzine.com: What are your future plans in terms of your music, album, and so forth?
Juliet Lloyd: Well, I'm in the process of recording my debut album, which will hopefully be done around late March or early April of 2005.  After that I plan on touring around the U.S. to sell albums and bring my music to as many people as possible.

Stylinzine.com: Which 'one hit wonder' (thus far) do feel disserved a more lasting career?
Juliet Lloyd: I loved Blu Cantrell's "Hit 'Em Up Style" that was out a couple of summers ago. I haven't really heard anything she's done since - she definitely deserves a comeback.

Stylinzine.com: If you were to sum up 'music' in general, what would you say it means to you?
Juliet Lloyd: It's always been easier for me to express myself through music than through anything else, so for me music is really a way to communicate all these thoughts and feelings in an elegant, artistic way.

Stylinzine.com: Given the choice, which would you prefer and why, -lead singer of a group or solo artist?
Juliet Lloyd: Right now, I'm totally happy being a solo artist - it's definitely much easier only having to plan around my own schedule!  But eventually, it would be really cool to perform my tunes with a regular bunch of musicians.  I'd love to have a large band that includes horns and backup singers that can really recreate and expand on the songs on the album.  There's only so much I can do when it's just me and the piano!  It'd be nice to have the freedom to get up and move around during a show and not have the music stop completely!

Stylinzine.com: What is your favorite song of all time?
Juliet Lloyd: I have tons!  I'd say, depending on my mood, that some of my favorites are "Ready for Love" by India Arie - "Cry Me a River" by Justin Timberlake, "For All We Know" by Donny Hathaway, and a bunch of others.  I could listen to these on repeat all day!

Stylinzine.com: As an artist what do you think makes a great hit?
Juliet Lloyd: I think a great hit has something - either lyrically, or musically - that can touch a lot of people and make them feel like the song was written just for them.  It has something that just draws you in and makes you want to hear it over and over again.

Stylinzine.com: Which classic musician do you think is the most inspirational?
Juliet Lloyd: I'd have to say Stevie Wonder.  He's had such an incredible career for such a long period of time, and you can really see the influence he's had on practically every pop and R&B performer today.

Stylinzine.com: By the end of the year what do you hope to accomplish in terms of your career?
Juliet Lloyd: I hope to have successfully released my album and be well on my way to my goal of reaching as many people as possible with my music, which hopefully will include radio airplay and lots of exciting gigs!

Stylinzine.com: What would the most flattering concert review about you say?
Juliet Lloyd: It would say that I'm even better live than I am recorded! That would be such a compliment in today's world of lip-synching and all that.

Stylinzine.com: Well thanks for dropping by Stylinzine.com, before we wrap up, what would you like to share with our readers?
Juliet Lloyd: Thanks again for having me, and thanks to all of you for your support!  Please feel free to check out my website, http://www.julietlloyd.com, for more info on my upcoming album and tour dates.
